The boys instincts of civilization and savagery become real when they realize they must do something that will help them to be rescued. No grownups, they are children taking care of themselves. But the longer away from adults the harder it is from them to remember the rules of civilization.
They realize the need to be rescued but the differences the boys continue to get in the way. A younger child, small boy with a mulberry colored mark on his face, claims of seeing a "beastie" or monster on the island which leaves more fear in the children. They will learn that the beast will soon represent the natural feeling of power and savagery that humans poses.
The three very different but very important characters of this novel provide the basis for the story. Ralph is the leader who wants civilization. Jack is selfish and wants power. They there is Piggy who is intellectual and sees things more scientific. However, the boys want survival and to be rescued therefore, are looking for a leader. They see Piggy as weak and even when suggests ideas for rescue they ignore him and rather listen to the stronger personality of Ralph.
Ralph gathered a meeting in the afternoon sun at the platform using the conch. He declared that after going to the mountain top they knew now there where no people on the island. He claims that is was a nightmare but Piggy continues to try to pursue the children that it is true. Ralph continues, "but there is no beastie!" (36) Jack defends Ralph and agrees there is no beastie.
"There's another thing. W can help them to fin us. If a ship comes near the island they may not notice us. So we must make smoke on top of the mountain. We must make a fire." (38) They ran like children out of control and piled wood together for a fire. So much of the wood was rotten. They were unsure how to start the fire, no matches to be found. Jack pointed to Piggy, "His specs-use them as burning glasses!" (40) "My specs! howled Piggy. "Give me my specs!" (41) As the fire flamed the boys became increasing excited and ran for more wood. The fire went out as quickly as it started the boys were very disappointed.
Ralph declares there must be rules so to be as civilized. He directs those in charge of fire, the hunters and those to be getting a lookout. Piggy tries to reason and explain that he wanted these things in a early meeting but was told to shut up. As they
