Chapter 2

Chapter 2 sheds light on the developing characters. The group is beginning to get to know each other. This also leads to the development of a social hierarchy.

Ralph is voted upon by the group to be the leader in spite of Jack really wanting the position. Ralph's personality is representative of the Phlegmatic genre. He is calm, cool, and collected and is well rounded. Ralph doesn't believe in the idea of the beast and kept his emotion hidden when the bot with the mulberry colored mark disappears.

Jack is more connected with the Choleric order. He has a compulsive need for change and with take charge at anytime he can such as when he volunteers to keep the signal fire. On the other hand he is also unsympathetic when the boy with the mulberry colored mark disappears

The character that brings philosophical advice and laid back antics to the group is Simon. Simon is reminiscent of the Melancholy personality. Simon gives credit where credit is due and will stick up for those picked on in the group. Simon shows the trait of being off in another world later in the book when he retreats to the clearing to ponder life.

I believe that the correct ruler was chosen. Ralph has the best personality of the group to lead. Jack was too power hungry and did not care about his "people" enough to lead. Jack demonstrates this at he end of the book when his group is a dictatorship and must endure Jack's orders. Ralph listens to the other children and is leading for the common good. With Piggy as his side-kick Ralph is the best choice for leader.
