One Hundred Love Sonnets Reflection

1. In stanza one line 3 Fisner’s translation states, “I love you as one loves certain obscure things,” and the unknown translation states, “I love you as certain dark things are to be loved,”. This pair of phrases give off different moods to the overall poem. Fisner’s version gives off the feeling that loving things differently is okay. It doesn.t sound that harsh whereas the other translation uses the word dark. This automatically changed the mood towards a negative demeanor stanza three line 2 Fisner’s translation states, “I love you directly without problems or pride.” And the unknown translation states, “I love you straightforwardly, without complexities or pride.”. These two distinctions affect the message the poem provides for the reader. Fisner’s translation allows for a less aggressive connation by using the words directly and problems. These words are both smaller words that still mean a lot whereas the other translation uses words such as straightforwardly and complexities. These words are unnecessarily large which intimidates readers and again increases the negativity of the poem. In stanza 3 line 6 Fisner’s translation states, “So close that your eyes close with my dreams. This seems to be personal because the person is comfortable enough to dream next to this person. A dream is also more of a soft sounding word than what is seen in the unknown translation. In stanza four line 3 it states, “So close that your eyes close as I fall asleep.” Although this still has a comforting tone it isn’t as peaceful as to dream next to someone. These distinctions change the overall impact of the poem because a single word can change a person’s perspective on a subject. So, by using larger and darker words a person is less likely to get a positive message from the poem.
2. These slight differences impact the total message of the poem because it changed the mood of the passage. The first translation has a positive and optimistic mood. Whereas the second translation gives a more negative and depressing mood. The translators choose different words to impact the message conveyed in the poem which is showcased through the word choices.
