Aim:
* To investigate whether obedience was a natural characteristic of Germans.
* To investigate whether the participants of the study would obey an authority figure when it involved inflicting pain on another human.
Method / Sample
* Sampling technique = self selected
* News paper advert
*Direct mailing (leaflets through doors)
*Got paid $4.50 just for turning up
*40 males aged between 20 - 50 yrs.
*Middle class and working class
*All form new haven and surrounding areas.
Proceedure
*Yale university
* The experimenter, a biology teacher 31
* The learner/victim, an accountant 47
* Drew 'lots' for roles (both pieces saying teacher on them)
* Learner sits in chair (hands strapped down so they can't move). Electrode's attached and paste (so their hands don't blister).
* Experimenter say there is NO LONG TERM tissue damage.
* Teacher is in another room.
* 'Shock generator' in front of teacher, 15 - 450 volts (ascending in 15's) also worded descriptions.
* Word pairs - correct answer - no shock
* Voltage increasing each time
* Teacher said aloud
