There have been many conflicts in Macbeth and the main conflict in the play arises from the prophesy’s of the three Witches. It is said that the prophesy’s made by the three Witches are the cause for Macbeth’s downfall, but is that really true? No it is not, because Macbeth made the choice to believe in the prophesy’s, he made the choice to kill the king regardless of his wife pressuring him to kill the king, and it is Macbeth that chooses to kill the wife and young son of Macduff and in doing all this it was his greed for power that led to his downfall. Macbeth is a full adult and is completely liable for his actions.
The first prophecy the Witches gave Macbeth was the prophecy that he was to become king. When the Witches told Macbeth that he was to become the next king he got excited as anyone would but he handled this matter in a very unrealistic way, took it upon himself to make the prophesy come true even though the Witches told him that it was going to happen, he with the council of his wife Lady Macbeth who insults Macbeth when Macbeth feels guilty for committing the murder as she says
“Infirm of purpose!
Give me the daggers. The sleeping and the dead
Are but as pictures. 'Tis the eye of childhood
That fears a painted devil. If he do bleed,
I’ll gild the faces of the grooms withal,
For it must seem their guilt.”
Macbeth was not forced to murder King Duncan he did it out of his own greed and selfishness, so for him to suffer so much in the end of the play is fair karma. Also Lady Macbeth ends up suffering from mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety which later causes her to commit suicide due to the guilty that of murdering King Duncan that haunted her, her struggle to sleep and her consent complain of having blood on her hands and not being able to wash it off
“Out, damn'd spot! out, I say!—One; two: why, then
'tis time to do't.—Hell is murky.—Fie, my lord, fie, a soldier, and
afeard? What need we fear who knows it, when none can call our
pow'r to accompt?—Yet who would have thought the old man to
have had so much blood in him?”
This is fair because it was Lady Macbeth that initially put so much pressure on Macbeth to murder King Duncan and had set up the whole plan on how they would execute the murder as well as cover it up. So by saying the murder of king Duncan is the Witches fault makes no sense because they only told Macbeth a prophecy of what could happen they did not tell Macbeth to kill anyone.
When Macbeth becomes king it is Macduff that is first person to stand against him. Macbeth does not like this resentment of his subjects especially Macduff but instead of just speaking to Macduff, and having a diplomatic conversation about the complaints that Macduff might have had in the way Macbeth handled the kingdom. Although Macbeth decided to handle the problem in another way so to punish Macduff for his disloyalty Macbeth sent murders to murder Macduff’s wife and children not only punishing Macduff for his disloyalty but also to send the message that Macbeth is not afraid of Macduff or the army he is helping Malcolm son of King Duncan put together to overthrow Macbeth. Although there is another reason for Macbeths’ paranoia, the Witches second visit along with their new prophecies result in the further craze of Macbeth. The Witches stated 3 new prophecies
“Macbeth! Macbeth! Macbeth! Beware Macduff.
Beware the thane of Fife. Dismiss me. Enough.
