Marijuana and its Derivative Terms

How many different synonyms can a word have? For example, the word marijuana has a countless number of synonyms some think that refer to it. Marijuana refers to the dried leaves of the hemp plant which can be smoked or chewed for a euphoric effect. Direct synonyms for marijuana are cannabis sativa, ganja, and marihuana. Some different slang terms for marijuana are pot, reefer, dope, and joint. The word marijuana has many different synonyms and new synonyms are created frequently.

Marijuana is not the actual name of the plant of which it originates. Marijuana is mainly a name for a drug made from the dried leaves of the hemp plant. Many drug dealers refer to marijuana in slang terms because they do not want to get into trouble with the police. Using new synonyms for marijuana keeps undercover officers confused about what these dealers are actually selling.

Effects of Marijuana also create some new names for the drug. Haze, for instance, represents the street name for the highest grade of the plant and the cloudy effect it creates when it is smoked. Haze also refers to the feelings one gets after smoking it, such as confusion, lack of mental clarity, and depression. Dope is another word that is used to refer to the drug, and explains how a person feels after the intake of marijuana. Dope is also used to describe a stupid person or even other drugs. Other words derived from marijuana's effect on the user are baked (which suggests the user's brain is being cooked) and stoned (which again suggests mental incapacity).

People also use various terms of measurement to describe marijuana. Amounts of coins and weight are used to refer to the prices and sizes of marijuana. Names like nickel, dime, and quarter represent the prices of the drug. For example, a dime means 10 dollars worth of marijuana.
