Marriage is a word that often refers to commitment, love, and loyalty to your husband or wife. That isn’t the case in Kate Chopin short stories The Storm, The Story of an Hour, and Desiree’s Baby. Marriage is looked different in all three stories. The characters all undergo some kind of a problem that’s going to make the reader think twice about their marriage.

The story The Storm is about an affair between Calixta, wife to Bobinot and mother to four year old Bibi, and Alcee, husband to Clarisse, during a terrible rain storm. Calixta is stuck in a relationship that she doesn’t want to be in. She doesn’t get the love and sexual satisfaction from her husband that she seeks it from Alcee who she is in love with. Calixta felt alone and bored in her marriage that she becomes unfaithful to her husband. She has this passion inside of her that she wants to release but cant with her husband because he doesn’t for fill her needs sexually. The Story of an Hour was about a woman named Mrs. Mallard who had heart problems. She receives horrible news that her husband has died from a train accident. Instead of being sad she goes to her room with excitement, looks out the window and says “free, free, free!” She is finally free from the depressing life she was living. She is happy and doesn’t have to live for no one but herself. At the end of the story she sees her husband who hadn’t died and she dies from heart disease of joy that kills. I think she loved her husband but just like the story the Storm she was stuck in a marriage she didn’t want to be in.

Desiree’s Baby is about a young woman named Desiree who marries a man named Armand. They have a baby boy together; they become extremely proud and happy parent and
