Problem Statement and Subject of Exploration
If point X is chosen at random along the section from B to C what is the probability that the three segments of the pipe cleaners can be made into a triangle
Process and Information Gathering
Describe your mathematical ideas concerning the questions
The ideas that came up were that this POW is mostly about triangles. so in question 2 it asked for what are the conditions to make a triangle, so then i thought about a lesson that in it we learned about how there is a formula that me and my classmates found, the formula is going to assist me in answering the questions since question 1 is asking what could make a triangle given A and B along with Question 2 but only with all 3 length
Methods i Tried but Failed
Methods i tried but failed included me creating my own lengths for question 2, since it asked what could make a triangle and my solution was wrong
Explain Process that led to solution
I first started by measuring the pipe cleaner which was at length 12 inches and then converted the measurement to Centimeters which then turned the 12 inches to 20.48 CM, then i followed the directions and doing so, it asked me to bend a side of the pipe cleaner to create side A and B but after that a large space remained from section B to C. that was my objective, to find which length creates a triangle. I immediately realize i could not use the high end that was close to C and vice versa that was B because that will not create a triangle, then i found a triangle which was equilateral, it had side lengths of 10 and so on. but the formula that truly helped me to solve this was A+B>C this formula is the triangle inequality principle which helps determine what is a triangle and what is not. i continue on and there was another triangle that i found which had the side length of 10,15,5. it made another triangle but i was unable to find the probability to find the 3 segments
Description of problems and how i solved it
With said formula of A+B>C i missed a important process and without it it came out wrong. I was adding the wrong number in the wrong way, instead what i had to do contrary to what i thought i had to do was use the 2 lowest numbers and then add them up and see if the result is greater than C
Solutions/Conclusions, Explanations and Conjectures
State the solution for the second question
For the second question i came up with side lengths that helped come up with the solution which is the sum of any two sides lengths has to be greater than a third which is true because if both side length are less they won't make a triangle you could even draw it and no triangle could be drawn.
generalize your findings for any length pipe cleaner
in my findings, the pipe cleaner side length were that of angle A and B did not change but rather stayed constant for all my findings which was 10CM. For my first finding i got a side length of 7 and 13, next i placed these numbers in the triangle inequality principle which then turned out to be true, so then i repeated this process over again for my findings
Explanation of solutions
The Solutions i got are correct because the formula for triangle inequality A+B>C is true, for example in my second finding i got the side lengths 10,10,8
