Media has a special place in my breaks between classes. According to my 24-hour diary, my great focus is on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. However, I have other new media that I expose myself to during the 24-hour period. Sometimes because of the blackout, I deprive myself of the new media and fins other activities to substitute them as explained in this essay.
The new media I gave during the 24-hour blackout was the use of a virtual world and telephone. I forego the use of these media in order to work on other activities that were also relevant to my schedule. For instance, the activities that I substituted in place of new-media use during the blackout included swimming, playing golf and visiting friends. I decided to engage in these activities for the purpose of buying time to wait for a normal resume. However, I was not comfortable with these activities because of my media addiction habits. As well known, it is difficult to do without media once you get exposed to it. There are several interesting things that a person misses and you would always wish that you continue using the media without giving up.
I experienced physiological, mental and physical changes as a result of depriving myself of the new media. For instance, I felt great loneliness, in most cases, I have lived to feel a sense of social belonging whenever I use the media. This mental feeling changed when I deprived myself of the new media. I became sad and felt disconnected from the people in my life. I also felt much stressed and thought the entertainment world will not be the same again. I never know being exposed to media for a long time results into physiological changes during the blackout.
During the blackout, I did not backslide in any way. I decided to focus on other activities even though it sounded hard to move on without the new media. I stuck to this decision because sometimes it important to test the other part of life, I mean where there are no media. In addition, at the time of the blackout, I learned a lot about how the world may look when all the media is banned. However, this cannot happen since a large portion of the population is potential consumers of the media and the majority use it to earn a living.
This exercise has greatly changed my perception about media and the world in today’s era. For example, I realized that media is an integral part of human life. Media is around us from the minute we wake up to the minute we go to sleep, but certain types of media are a lot more obvious than others; over the past 3 days I have been keeping track of the amount of my media usage and what types of media I use. If people find time to access my media dairy they would think that I spend a lot of time on media while forgetting other important activities. However, this is not the case, most people including I find media to be really interesting and can make someone feel relaxed. Personally, I found watching and listening to new media stuff absolutely captivating. Exposure to media technology gives an individual the opportunity to explore new things and becomes part of the changing world. Media has a big impact on the way people live and the things they do.
