The main reason for me to pursue a career in Medicine is to enable people to be with their loved ones for as long as possible. I, unfortunately did not have the privilege to grow up with my grandfather as he passed away from dementia and my grandmother who passed away from stomach cancer before I was able to acknowledge who they were. This has had a huge impact on me. Friends and family tell me stories about what incredibly hardworking and inspiring people they were and I can never thoroughly comprehend this as I have not experienced this myself. I want to give people the chance to be with their loved ones for as long as possible by treating them and prolonging their lives. Both my grandparents died from conditions which do not have a cure but effective treatments. Through the knowledge I gain I hope to find the cure for these diseases.
The human body has never failed to intrigue me. The ability of the organs and tissues to perform their role and work in accordance with other processes fascinates me and through studying medicine I hope to build my knowledge about organs and tissues.
As India the birth country of my parents and where my closest family and friends live I have a deep attachment to the people in India. I hope to build my knowledge and qualify from a well- established institution in order to begin my own hospitals and clinics the most vulnerable parts of India to help those in these communities to have better health and grow to their full potential. I want to give those in the most rural and remote areas a chance at life to live longer and healthier to attend school and work in order to provide for their families and children.
I believe medicine is a course which encompasses many of the characteristics which I possess and ones which I hope to develop. I am a hardworking, diligent and a caring student which I think are important traits doctors must have in order to succeed in a career in medicine. I hope through this course to build my focus, grow my compassion and my organisation and communication skills.
After studying medicine I will be presented with an array of options which I can choose from and work in the fields of medicine I am interested in. I think this is an advantage which a course like medicine and not a lot of other course provide a significant amount of options as medicine does.
A doctor should be able to empathise with their patients and understand their feelings and thoughts. This is important for a doctor as it strengthens the doctor and patient bond meaning that patients are more likely to ask questions in regards to their treatment and be open about their emotions and thought processes with the doctor.
Doctors should remain calm in the most stressful situations. They should be able to think clearly and responsibly during high pressure circumstances and ensure well-being for themselves and those around them. Remaining calm encourages those around them to also be calm creating an environment in which people are able to behaviour responsibly and think rationally making appropriate decisions in order to save lives.
