Money or love? This has been a question that a lot of people have been arguing over for centuries. It’s a very complicated issue with no clear answer. The optimists and hopeful romantics will say love and the money hungry, power-seeking ones will say money. But anyone who can actually think for a moment will realize that it’s not as simple as that. Having one of those things without the other would be totally useless.
Let’s take the tale of the great Gatsby. Both money and love are very prevalent in this book. Gatsby had all the money that a man might want, but he was miserable for he didn’t have the one thing that he truly wanted, which was the woman he loved, Daisy. He would throw lavish and extravagant parties just hoping that she’d one day show up at one of them. Money is indeed very important but as you can see from Gatsby’s tale, it’s all useless without love.
Even though the tale of Gatsby shows that love is important, in the current world we live in I think money is more important. I know I may seem very shallow for saying this, but money, not love, is the glue that keeps couples together. I’m not saying that money should be the objective of relationships. Far from it actually and I’m not saying that having a lot of money will make a relationship successful either. No amount of money in this world can guarantee that.
What I’m trying to say is that money offers a sense of security and comfort. You may be madly, deeply in love with someone but if you don’t have the money to support yourselves or lead a comfortable life, I can assure you that at one point or another you will end up having constant arguments and may even resent each other. In the end, one of you will undoubtedly leave the other or live a very miserable life together. Let’s take another scenario. You’re in love with someone, you eventually end up getting married but you don’t have financial stability. Sooner or later you’ll give birth to a child. Don’t you think that it’s cruel to bring a child into this world knowing you won’t be able to support it? You may love it with all your heart, but if you don’t have the money to feed, clothe and educate the kid, you just brought a kid into this world to suffer. This may take weeks, months, years or decades to manifest but it absolutely will happen sooner or later. I know this sounds harsh but only because it’s true.
