Tourism is an industry that has historically been tied to ever growing Globalization trends. In the 21st Century, the tourism industry in India has seen an ever-increasing growth. The below is the month- wise analysis of the number of foreign tourists arrivals in India in the 21st century:

The data set taken here is that of number of foreign tourists arrival in India month-wise in 21st century (Jan,2003 – Dec,2015). The summary statistics presented here gives a lot of useful information.

  • The minimum and maximum value in the data set is 141508 (May, 2003) and 912723 (Dec, 2015) respectively. This clearly shows that there is positive increase in the number of foreign tourists in India from 2003 to 2015.

  • The mean value of the data is 457668.9359 which shows that in a period of 13 years, average number of foreign tourists arriving in India per month is around 457670. This indicates that Tourism industry in India is growing at a very fast pace.
  • The median value is 445098 which is very close to the mean value thereby conveying the ever-increasing growth of foreign tourism in India.
  • Thus, tourism industry in India has vast potential for generating employment and earning large amount of foreign exchange besides giving a fillip to the country’s overall economic and social development.

Number of Tourists visiting India yearly

The above bar graph gives the number of foreign tourists visiting India on a yearly basis from 2003 to 2015. The chart clearly depicts the year-on-year growth in the tourism industry starting from 2726214 in 2003 to 8027133 in 2015. The growth percentage over the years is approximately 7.5% which is quite significant.  Along with the bar chart a table shows number of tourists per year.

Considering the growth in this industry, it should be the area of focus for the Government and other NGOs to device a mechanism to realize the full potential of India and improve the employment conditions as well. This will play a vital role to ensure the smooth and holistic development of the country.

Percentage monthly distribution of tourists

  • The 3-D pie char depicts the percentage of foreign tourists arriving in India in the year 2003. As is clearly visible, December has the highest percentage of tourists (12%) and May has the lowest percentage (5%). The similar trend is visible for all the years from 2003 to 2015.
  • The percentage of tourists increases from May (5%) to Dec (12%) and it further decreases to Apr (6%). This trend explains the fact that weather plays a very important role in the tourism industry.
  • The same trend is visible for all the years from 2003 to 2015 in the below line diagram, i.e, for every year tourism reaches the peak in Dec and it is at its minimum in May.
  • It can be concluded from the above trend that climate and weather are important factors in tourists’ decision making and influences the successful operation of tourism businesses.[pic 4]
