Unit 2 - Recruitment in the Workplace
1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 Recruitment in the Workplace
In my opinion it is important to have a good understanding of how businesses acquire one of their key resources - people. At the moment I am already involved in part-time work, ad I am aware that if I were to take a vocational course in the future, a work placement would be a beneficial factor, which would be involved. Studying the processes involved in the recruitment and selection of people to work for a business gives us an overall better understanding of:
§ The various processes that are involved from the business side when recruiting and selecting the workforce
§ How we can prepare ourselves when applying for jobs and interviews
1.2 Purpose of Report
In this unit, I shall be investigating, undertaking and hopefully learning to understand some of the primary roles and functions inherent in the work of a human resource department in a medium-large sized company. I will be producing a detailed report, which will explain how I have set about recruiting and selecting an individual for a particular job role, as well as producing an induction and motivational programme for a job role and applicant of my choice, on the basis of the results of my research. Members of my group will adopt the roles of prospective applicants for my chosen job role and will participate in my overall selection process, as will I participate in their selection processes also. This should hopefully give me a deeper insight into the whole interview process and will make me more confident in giving my own interview to potential applicants for my job role.
1.3 Research
I will be basing my assignment upon Morrisons Supermarkets, and will be visiting them along with the other members of my group to collect information and documentation to aid me with my project. I am hoping to collect information of the following factors of the business:
§ The various job roles within the company
§ The recruitment process and how it works
§ The selection process and how potential employees are chosen
§ What happens to employees in terms of induction training
§ The processes that exist to motivate staff
§ The legal framework that human resources has to work within
I will also be carrying out an interview to one of the staff at Morrisons, where I will be able to ask the member of staff any questions regarding their job role. Hopefully, this will give me a clearer understanding of what is involved in the job, and the various skills, qualifications, experience and expertise that is required. As well as collecting research about Morrisons Supermarkets, I will also be collecting data from other well-known supermarkets, so that I am able to make comparisons between them and Morrisons. The supermarkets that I will approach for information will be Sainsbury's and Tesco. I have chosen these 2 supermarkets because I feel that they are the main 2 competitors for Morrisons. For my project, I will be including a mixture of primary and secondary research to aid my study. These are identified below.
1.3.1 Primary research
Primary research is quite simply information that comes from research carried out to determine a response from the market to a new product, and is collected specifically for the study at hand. It can be obtained either by the investigator observing the subject being studied, or by communicating directly or indirectly with the subject. Direct communication techniques include such qualitative research
