"The Crucible" Essay
"The Crucible" was a play filled with suspense, betrayal, and drama. For the most part, the play and the movie were alike. There were a few minor differences, such as the opening scenes, but the directors of the movie did a good job of converting the play to the movie.
The movie and the play had different opening scenes. In the play, the story starts with Reverend Parris kneeling at the bedside of his daughter who is lying on the bed, unconscious. A quote that shows this is at the beginning of Act I. "As the curtain rises, Reverend Parris is discovered kneeling beside the bed...His daughter is lying on the bed, inert." At the beginning of the movie, we discover the girls, Abigail and her friends, dancing in the woods. At one point, Abigail is nude while dancing around. They are with Tituba, who is mixing up a concoction while the girls are blurting out names of boys they had crushes on.
I think the movie shows more compassion for Abigail than the play did. The play seems to make Abigail seem like a more evil person. I think this because the movie does show you all the bad things she did but it does it in a way that tries to make you have compassion for her character. It seems like it's more okay in the movie because she is trying to protect herself. In the play, there was no remorse for her and you can tell she was lying. For example, they would have long pauses in between her words to show she was making things up as she went along. Also, John Proctor's character calls her a whore many times.
I don't think Jon Proctor was evil at all. The movie made him seem more likable because in the movie, he was always very calm and never lost his temper, which results in maker you seem nicer. In the play, he is still not perceived as evil, but you can tell he is a much louder person with a shorter temper. You can tell this because of all the exclamation points they used when he got mad. I think Proctor is good man who just slipped up and made a mistake.
The movie uses effects that you would find in films that you can't see and hear obviously because you are reading, but the play did a good job of using play directions and character expressions. For instance,
