Speech
After my first conference, I gained passion and the confidence to speak in public, and at the same time enjoyed playing the role of a country’s diplomat. Ever since, I became fond of MUN and started actively participating in conferences. Even when there are no conferences in my hometown, I was willing to travell to places all alone just to join a 3 day conference. MUN not only gave me more confidence in conferences, but also in everything that I do.
Because of MUN, I had the opportunity to travel overseas and meet wonderful people from various walks of life. And as such, MUN has opened my eyes to different cultures and how people think, allowing me to meet new people with common interests and learn much more than current world issues and politics. Every conference has taught me something new which will definitely stand me in good stead.
And I believe that you too will learn something from this conference.
Your presence in a MUN conference means you care about global issues. You are here to not only talk about it, you are here to engage in meaningful discussions, challenge each other intellectually and find solutions to addressing these problems. In the words of Malala Yousafzai, “When the whole world is silent, even one voice becomes powerful.” Society needs you, the younger generation to be bold and voice out on the important issues facing everyone. Only then, can we solve insurmountable problems and create a better community.
I would like to share a story with you. One evening after an MUN conference, I was taking the monorail back home. In the train there was this guy in his mid thirties from Dubai. Based on my formal attire and the MUN tag around my neck, he figured I was joining MUN and so he sat beside me and we had some conversation. He shared with me his MUN experiences 10 years ago in Dubai and how MUN taught him skills that made him a successful writer today who has published several books. He told me this, “In order to stand out from society, you must be armed with these 3 important life skills, presentation skills, writing skills and speaking skills. And Model United Nations is the platform for you to begin mastering these skills. I am grateful for being involved in MUN and you are truly lucky for being involved in MUN at such a young age.”
