The History and Production of the Ford Mustang

Ford wanted to come out with a sports car that would be faster, more sleek and all around better than the other companies. In 1964 Ford Motor Company developed the Ford Mustang. This car would make every other Automotive company want what they had.

Carroll Shelby had great influence on the production of the Mustang. Carroll broke the land speed record in 1954 at Bonneville. Carroll won a 24-hour race at Le Mans with one of his good friends and teammates Roy Salavadori.( Carroll Shelby History) Carroll Shelby developed the Shelby Cobra. This was one of the fastest production cars ever made. The Shelby Cobra came in a aluminum body, with an l 289 cubic inch V-8 or an optional 427 cubic inch V-8 boasting a massive 530 horsepower. (Carroll Shelby History) In 1992 Carroll Shelby was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame( Carroll Shelby History).

The first Mustang was put into production in 1964. It was brought to a dealership on March 9th 1964. It was bought by a man named Captain Stanley Tucker. The dealership was

directed not to sell this mustang for a couple of weeks for unknown reasons. Captain Stanley Tucker came to the unveiling and offered the selling price to buy this car. The dealership sold the car to him, even though instructed not to. Two years or so later Ford realized that they wanted the first Mustang back so they offered to trade Tucker for a 1966 model built exactly to his liking. The first mustang was returned to Ford in Dearborn Michigan. It was later donated in 1966 to the Henry Ford museum in Dearborn.(The First Mustang)

There were many engines available in these Mustangs. Two of the most popular engines in the true GT models are the 5.0 liter engine and the 4.6 liter engine. Both of these are very powerful and economical engines. In 1980 the 5.0 liter engine came into production. It was put in the LX and GT models of the mustang. Ford used the 5.0 liter engine until 1996 when the 4.6 liter engine replaced it. Ford thought a smaller cubic inch engine would be more efficient for today's uses. The 5.0 liter V-8 engine came with 235 horsepower from the cobra powered Mustang. The 4.6 liter is lighter and more efficient, it will put out around 300 horsepower.(5.0 liter vs. 4.6 liter)

Ford crate engines are extremely popular to car customizes. They offer a large amount of horsepower in small and big block size. Lighter and more horsepower efficient these engines are able to handle more vigorous amounts of horsepower. They are built to be extremely strong.

The 331 cubic inch engine puts out 410 horsepower. It is a 302 stroker engine. The 347 cubic inch engine puts out 415 horsepower. It is a 302 roller version block . The 396 cubic inch engine comes with 450 horsepower. It is a 351 wide block. The 408 cubic inch engine comes with 485 horsepower. The block is also a 351 wide block. The 418 cubic inch engine comes with 515 horsepower. That is also a 351 block. One of the biggest engines Ford motor company produces is the 427 cubic inch Big Block. It has a massive amount of horsepower, topping out at 530 horsepower. The block is called a Iron Eagle Dart, 351 Big Block.( Ford Crate Engines)

There are many body packages available for the Ford Mustang. The California Special is only available in the 2005 or newer models. It features a front and rear bumper, that is lowered to the ground to give the car that "mean" stance. It also comes with an upgraded 18inch wheel. There is a fiberglass hood on the package as well as a hood scoop to give the Mustang a more fast look. The GT model comes with your basic upgraded body kit. It has lower front and rear bumper with an upgraded front grill. They also come with a upgraded polished 17inch wheel. The Cobra R model of the Mustang comes with an extremely dropped front and rear end, the hood and other kits on the car are like no other. This style is straight race style, a fast sleek body package sets the Cobra R away from any other Mustang. The Salleen body kit is a style that makes the mustang look fast but yet classy. It has a curved style that let's you know what kind of car you are looking at. With a toned down spoiler this body style is sleek and stylish. (Mustang body Packages)
