The "How and Why" method of analyzation works for a wide variety of essays. It is designed to keep the paper simple and focused. The outline is very structured in order to keep a consistency between description and explanation. Sometimes, even the best students tend to stray from the subject they are writing about. The focus of the paper is lost because description and summary are reiterated.
The way this method works is very simple. First, you as a writer must state your thesis and give several solid reasons to back your statement. Then, in subsequent paragraphs, you must explain how the author accomplish what you propose and then state why the author has chosen to do what you say that he does. Let's take a look at an example outline:
I. Introduction (State your thesis - what was the author trying to accomplish)
A. Proof #1
B. Proof #2
II. Proof #1
A. How (How did the author accomplish what he set out to do - give specific references)
B. Why (Why did the author wish to accomplish this / why does your proof actually prove)
III. Proof #2
A. How (How did the author accomplish what he set out to do - give specific references)
B. Why (Why did the author wish to accomplish this / why does your proof actually prove)
IV. Conclusion
