Whats in a name?
In 1999 Doug and Kim were watching part of the Reno Air Races on television. One of the leaders in this incredible event was a plane named Nemesis. This plane was very successful having an winning streak of 44 races while flying at speeds approaching 300 MPH.
Doug and Kim looked at eachother and thought that Nemesis would be a great name for a skydiving team. While neither Doug or Kim had ever participated on a competitive 4-way team, they were thinking about competing the the 1999 US Nationals since the meet was going to be in Florida, where Doug currently lived.
Beginnings...
Doug lived in Florida at the time and the 1999 US Nationals were hosted by Skydive Sebastian, so Doug and Kim decided to team up with two other people to create a 4-way team to compete at nationals in the intermediate division. Since they already had plans to move to Atlanta, Georgia shortly after nationals, the team with Steve Graves and Steve Johnson was a short term "pick-up" team that logged approximately 40 training jumps during a few weekends prior to nationals.
Despite the limited training and 4-way competition experience, Nemesis placed 4th in the intermediate division with a 10.4 average. A few months later, Kim and Doug, already living in Atlanta, competed with two alternates in the NSL Championships and took 4th place. The experience in 1999 motivated Doug and Kim to pursure 4-way once they had moved to Georgia. For the 2000 season they teamed up with Jaimie Johnson and Chris Golden to form Nemesis 2000. Jaimie had trained and competed on a 4-way team in 1998 and Chris had competed in the US Collegiate Championships several times. Nemesis began its fisrt full season by posting a 10.5 average Nemesis 2000 at its first meet. The team consistenly progressed through the seasonwhile making approximately 250 jumps and flying 10 hours of wind tunnel time in the SkyVenture tunnel. The team received frequent coaching from PD Blue team members.
The 2000 season culminated with a silver medal in the US Nationals 4-way Advanced Class and a gold medal in the US Nationals 8-way Intermediate Class. For the 8-way competition, Nemesis teamed up with 3 members of its Georgia Skydiving League rival
