New Deal Programs

Franklin D. Roosevelt would broadcast these "fireside chats" over the radio during the time of the Great Depression. He called them fireside chats because it was a way of getting everyone to know what was going on. They were like being around a fire and telling everyone a story. The purpose of these chats were to get his messages out to everyone so that they weren't confused and felt reassured about what was going on. FDR speaks about how he feels about the depression and how the government is dealing with it. He says that the Congress supports him and feels that the way things are needs to be changed. He mention's Congress because they are the ones who have the power to pass laws. FDR also explains about the Civilian Conservation Corps. He uses the expression Ð''killing two birds with one stone," to say that CCC will be both "enhancing the value of our natural resources" and "giving opportunity of employment to one quarter of million of the unemployed." By saying this, he means that the CCC will provide jobs to the unemployed as well as help to preserve the natural resources by planting forestry and flood prevention work. President Roosevelt states, "We cannot ballyhoo ourselves back into prosperity." By this, he means that, once back in the green, we shouldn't go back to our old ways. FDR also said "Ð'...the domestic situation is inevitably and deeply tied in with the conditions in all the other nations of the world."
