Ray Bradbury expressed in There Will Come Soft Rains that even the most highly developed things can be destroyed. No matter how intricate the work that is done upon these ideas of lack of destruction, it has been proven impossible on many occasions. Ray Bradbury successfully explains how this is true in There Will Come Soft Rains. The same is true for our technology today, such as the Twin Towers. The Twin Towers were thought to be indestructible just as the house of technology in Ray Bradbury's short story.
The Twin Towers were thought to be everlasting. The construction of the Twin Towers was very detailed and used the strongest, most durable equipments possible, for the time period. With consisting of 200,000 tons of steel, 425 cubic yards of concrete, and weighing up to 500,000 tons it would make sense to be thought of as indestructible. "The construction of the towers was 'Economy is not in the sparseness of materials that we use,' said Yamasaki of his $350 million estimated cost, 'but in the advancement of technology, which is the real challenge'"(Kevin Matthews) Both towers were just shy of 1400 feet each. Even during the creation of the 16-acre World Trade Center site, in 1966, five streets were closed off and 164 buildings were demolished. The World Trade Center site took four years just to plan. Very many people were skeptical about the construction. Criticizing people said that a huge attraction such as this would rob New York of it's appeal, ruin the skyline, disrupt television reception, and hurt city services. Just to erect buildings such as these a total of about 10,000 people were needed to excavate more than 1.2 million yards of land. Even sixty people died during construction. After construction was finished, they became instant landmarks.
The North tower was opened in Dec. 1970 and the south tower in Jan. 1972. They were also dedicated in April of 1973. They were the world's tallest buildings for a brief amount of time, until the Sears Tower was finished in May of 1973. Roughly 50,000 people worked in the buildings, and also 200,000 visited or passed through each day. The complex had its own zip code, 10048. In 1993, terrorists drove a truck containing 1,100 pounds of explosives into the basement parking garage. It left a crater 22 feet wide and five stories deep. Six people were killed and 1,000 injured. But, that didn't end the life of the towers, they were cleaned, repaired and open in only a few weeks. But, September 11th, 2001 will be a date remembered in the World Trade Center history. Three planes were hijacked by terrorists planning to crash into the Twin Towers and the Pentagon, and all three accomplished this. The Twin Towers were demolished shortly after the attacks and the Pentagon took a pretty big hit, but survived. Thus, proving Bradbury's point throughout the short story, There Will Come Soft Rains.
In the short story, There Will Come Soft Rains, the entire story is about a house which is extremely advanced. The clocks in the house told you what time it was and what you should be doing. The house was so innovative
