The number of children who are obese or overweight has been on high rise over the years. In the United States childhood obesity is the number 1 health concern among parents. Last month my nephew was diagnosed overweight by his pediatrician on his Well Checkup exam. He was five pounds above the ninety-five percentile growing chart. The most common way to define overweight or obesity is to consider both weight and body composition. His eating habits have change dramatically. Children who are obese or overweight are at a risk of serious health problems. Diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol are just some of the risk. They might also become depressive and develop low self-esteem. What are the real causes of obesity among young children? Should parents be blame or genetics?

Although there are some causes of obesity related to genetics or hormonal, in most cases is due to poor eating habits and under exercising. For example, busy parents often don’t have time to cook a healthy meal and opt for fast grease foods. My kids have essay access to the fridge and pantry. When I do my groceries, I buy lots of fruits, vegetables, and gluten free food. Sodas, juices high in sugar or junk food are not allowed in my household. Children grow at different rates and different times and require extra calories to fuel their growth. But if they consume more calories than they are burning off the result will be unneeded weight gain. There

are some good strategies that we should follow to maintain a healthy weight, like cutting the portions to the size of your fist, reading food labels to and using smaller plates. Taking a walk after dinner is another great idea.

Kids spend more time watching TV, and playing video games, rather than actively playing outside. Children need at least one hour of exercise daily for optimal health. Children who sit too much and move too little are at higher risk of becoming overweight. My kids are only allowed to watch TV for 30 minutes a day, and play video games on Saturdays. I might not always have the time to take them to the park everyday but we play active indoor games and do chores together which is a good way to get some exercise. This helps to ensure that there is minimal quantity of facts in their bodies. If your budget allows you, sign up your children in sports or another fun activity.
