Observance Aspects of First American's Organizational Culture

An organization's culture will vary from the different types of organizations, which depends on the aspects shown. Organizational culture is the shared beliefs and values that influence the behavior of organization's members (Schermerhorn, Hunt, and Osborn, 2005, p.10). There are four aspects, how communication flows, organizational diversity, dress and language, and technology in which my perception will be addressed at First American Real Estate Tax Services. Communication is commonly known as a two-way street.

How Communication Flows

Within an organization, communication is the specific process through which information moves and is exchanged throughout an organization (Schermerhorn, Hunt, and Osborn, 2005, p.6). Information should flow downward, upward, and laterally. We all want to be informed from the top to the bottom and from the bottom to the top about what is happening within First American. Downward communication would be lower-level personnel wanting to know what higher levels are doing and to be regularly reminded of key policies, strategies, objectives, and technical developments. An example of upward communication is, in the military, upper chain of command inquiring about what the enlisted personnel are doing or working on, how they feel about their jobs, what their problems are, and any suggestions for improvement the team may have. A form of lateral communication is (Schermerhorn, Hunt, and Osborn, 2005, p.7) people must be willing and able to communicate across departmental or functional boundaries and to listen to one another's needs. I wish the communication flow at First American was better than what it is now.

Last week, I requested a day off and my immediate supervisor declined my request stating two people were already off. Being prior military, I used my chain of command. I approached my director with the situation. The facts were I am ahead on my work, have the time on the books, and the tax business is slow. The director agreed that the request should not have been denied. I sent my supervisor an e-mail asking him when he was going to resign my request per the director. We met in the conference room and he immediately told me that I was belittling him by not excepting his answer and leaving the situation alone. I merely used my chain of command to voice my concern. He took the situation too personal. By me escalating the situation, I now get to enjoy my day off.

Organizational Diversity

Organizational diversity is a regulation required by law. The presence of individual differences based on gender, race, an ethnicity, age, able-bodiedness, and sexual orientation is known as workforce diversity (Schermerhorn, Hunt, and Osborn, 2005, p.10). Every organization can benefit from diversity, which would make an organization more successful.

At my current job and the Navy, there are young and old, disabled, women and men, different ethnic backgrounds and religion, which makes the organization diverse. In the U. S. Navy, I won Diversity Recruiter of the Year for enlisting the most young men and women of ethnic differences with high education levels. First American needs to work on their diversity in the leadership positions. There is a vast majority of Caucasians within the company that are managers. I see several other employees that should have leadership/management roles. At First American, it is who we know not what we know when it come to promotions.

There is a possible risk of stereotyping or discriminating against someone or a group of people. For example, all black people eat chicken and watermelon, and drink kool-aid. If a survey was taken, it would prove that 100% of black people do not eat chicken and watermelon, and drink kool-aid, other races do as well. Stereotyping is merely a misunderstanding between different cultures because people are afraid to find out for themselves. Even when going out to nightclubs,
