In the novel, Of Mice and Men, the author includes the theme of loyalty and sacrifice between friends and illustrates the loyalty and sacrifice between friends through the friendship of Lennie and George. The author shows that the loyalty and sacrifice between friends will make people do whatever they can for their friend. George showed a big amount of loyalty and sacrifice to his friend Lennie by staying with him through his problems. George goes through getting kicked out from places, and losing job after job for his friend Lennie. Ultimately George gives the best gift to Lennie he can, the gift of peace. No matter what happens George stays with Lennie even if it means him sacrificing a better life to be with his best friend… Lennie is loyal to his friend. In the same way, George is loyal to his friendship to Lennie. George sacrifices everything in his own life for Lennie, his best friend. Loyalty and friendship are not mutually exclusive. They are not a choice that the author is forcing on his characters or on us. They are an active construction which shows that if individuals believe in others, they will act with loyalty and friendship in mind. The friendship Lennie and George had in Of Mice and Men is incomparable to most friendships today. They were two very different people brought together by destiny. Through all the hardships that they’ve been through, they still managed to pull through it all, until it came to the very end.
