learn the narrator's involvement with the war: He supervises a group of ambulance
drivers. At the start of this chapter the narrator discusses the condition of the cars with the
men. Later in the chapter Rinaldi convinces the narrator to join him in visiting Miss
Barkley. He agrees and meets Miss Barkley and her friend Helen Ferguson. In chapter 5
of the book the narrator speaks of preparations being made for the planned Italian
offensive against the Austrians, while this happens four Austrian shells explode nearby.
That night after dinner he visits Miss Barkley again, and they kiss. Three days pass and
the narrator visits Miss Barkley again. She asks him to call her Catherine. They begin to
talk and she starts to question his love for her. He lies to her and says he does. After they
are done talking they kiss and part for the evening. In chapter 7 the narrator encounters a
fellow American who is an Italian infantry man. The man wants to be excused from
combat because of pain caused by a hernia. The narrator comes up with a plan and he
tells the American to intentionally injure himself in the head. The man does so. Later as
he is writing a letter home the narrator fantasizes about Catherine. As he is going to go
see Catherine he gets drunk and we find out his name Frederic Henry. In chapter 8 Henry
is given the saint Anthony medal by Catherine on the way to a river he was told to drive
to. delete this and copy the rest for kepplers thing. As they arrive at this river the men
start to discuss different options for ending the war. As this conversation goes on the men
get hungry and Henry and another man go and get food. When the return bombs begin to
