One Man, Three Arms

If you can think back to June of 1999, when the movie Smart House was released, you can probably imagine how it felt to really want to be Sally Feilds, because the woman could do sixteen things at a time! From the day we are born we are expected to multitask. Yes sweety we do need you to simultaneously breath and exist. Pretty rough, right? From the standpoint of a teenager who feels like she’s always multitasking, I can say with confidence that there are fewer pros rather than cons when trying to do more than once thing at a time. Some say we’re maximizing our productivity, while others are concerned with the amount of quality over quantity of our daily tasks.

Some people see multitasking as a way of life, a second nature. Many even believe it’s in our evolutionary instinct, a way to handle a more complex brain. The view- simply put- is that our brains are meant to multitask. There even is some scientific evidence that multitasking can maximize your productivity. For many members of society, multitasking allows them to complete all of their daily objectives in one swipe, leaving the rest of their day free to do as they wish. What, however are some of the downsides to trying to finish your whole day in one hour?

Multitasking can seriously cripple the quality of work a person puts out. When trying to write a practice ACT essay and the season finale of Nurse Jackie, what do you think a student will honestly pay more attention to? The reduced amount of value in work truly isn’t worth the extra time in the day. When you could produce three As in the same time as 5 Cs, which would you choose? An abundance of multitasking can also lead to depleted amounts of time spent with important people in our lives.
