In the field of operations management, operations managers are faced with various challenges. Operations managers should be well trained and educated to tackle various issues arising in all business functions and not merely operations (Kumar & Suresh, 2009). In addition, they need to have a grasp of the whole flow of the business, the customers, the products and the technology. Operations managers having all this knowledge and skills will be in a better position to understand and communicate with specialists from different functions in order to generate better results in relation to problems related to operations (Kumar & Suresh, 2009). Moreover, the challenge which most organisations face nowadays is managing a service system. This is due to the fact that the business environment is continuous changing in a more competitive one. Thus the traditional approaches to managing operations in a manufacturing industry are no longer adequate to achieve and improve excellence (Kumar & Suresh, 2009). Therefore, in order to enable manufacturing transformation, manufacturers are turning to a different more broad solution which covers the warehouse, the plant floor, product supply network and quality so as to achieve excellence and sustain in the market. In this respect, the job of operations managers working in the manufacturing industry is constantly becoming more difficult in relation to the factors discussed further which impact organisations.
Globalization
Globalization has radically altered the way operations managers conduct their day-to-day activities (Horváthová, 2010). Landforms, distances, and time zones no longer separate people from information. . This does not only imply that the local firm faces competition from abroad, but also means that the former goes international. Being in competition with global firms, means that the local firm will have to maintain a low price without deteriorating the quality
