Running head: ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR FORCES

Organizational Behavior Forces

Abstract

Organizational behavior may show itself differently in Citi Trends, YMCA and Memorial Hospital. We plan to discuss how the economy, customer demands restructuring are affected and how each organization holds to their mission statements.

Organizational behavior is impacted internally and externally in different ways depending on what type of organization it is. In this paper we will discuss three different organizations and how those organizations impact the economy. We will also discuss the mission statement, customer demands and restructuring. Citi Trends is a value priced, family apparel retail store. Internal and external forces can affect the business. The forces I will elaborate on are the organizational mission, restructuring of the company, and the Economy. Citi Trends mission is to provide quality fashions for low to moderate income customers on a timely basis. At Citi Trends our mission is to serve our customers in a clean store with a friendly atmosphere. The challenge begins. The first thing Citi Trends strives to do is provide the latest trends at a low price. In order to find the latest trends the company has a well-organized buying team. The buyers are divided into groups according to the items they buy. For example, the plus sized buyer's focus is on what's hot for the plus size department, and the kid's buyer's focus on what is hot in the kids department. In order to find the best merchandise the buyers surf the internet, look in magazines, and travel to vendor shows in various states once a month. Before the buyer buys an item they analyze the cost. Some questions they might ask is: How much would this item cost in a non-off price store? What is the manufacturer's price? What is the best valued price for our customer? The buyers will buy an item and sell it to our customers at the lowest price possible. This plan has worked so far. The company has been able to open 40-50 stores per year. The second part of the mission statement says we will provide a comfortable environment for the customers to shop. Citi Trends trains the store staff on excellent customer service. When a customer enters the door they should be greeted with "Hi, Welcome to Citi Trends". The purpose of the greeting is to let the customer know that they are noticed and their business is very important to us. Citi Trend's associates at store level should treat each customer the way they would want to be treated: promptly, courteously, honestly, and with a positive attitude. Citi Trends realizes that success of the company depends upon the satisfaction of the customer. I must admit that Citi Trends do receive several customer complaints about customer service and the maintenance of the store. Each complaint is handled in a timely manner to ensure that the customer is the most important asset to the company. With the increase of stores, Citi Trends had to restructure the organization. Citi Trends started with one (1) distribution center to currently three (3). Each center services different store locations. For example, the stores located in northeastern states have their merchandise shipped from the Darlington, South Carolina distribution center, and the stores located in the southeast are serviced from the two Savannah Centers. The expansion of the company brought on new job positions. If a person wants to move for a position as Store Manager to a District manager they can not, they must go to the newly formed position "Area Manager". If they are successful, in about three months they could be eligible to become a District Manager.

The Economy also affects the organization behavior. One might ask what Economy goods and are major selling campaigns that Citi Trends strives to gain as much revenue as possible. Citi Trends peak selling campaigns are as follows: Easter, Mother's Day, Father's Day, 4th of July, Back to School, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day sale. During these times the sales sky rockets because the services." Citi Trends is affected by the rise and fall of the Economy. During the course of a year there consumers spend lots of money on gifts, new outfits, and seasonal wardrobes. Also to help boost sales Citi Trends opens new store locations during these holidays.

Acts of nature can also have an impact on the Economy. Last year hurricane Katrina was a disaster. Citi Trends lost a few stores in the New Orleans area. Some might think the Economy was down, but Citi Trends as a company soared in sales, with the help of the government funding the victims with the money to start over. Stores that had never made a million dollars, became million dollar stores by the end of the fiscal year, and the stores that where million dollar store the previous year, achieved the million dollar status sooner than expected. So as you can see internal and external forces can and will impact an organization in different ways.

The YMCA's goal is about the same as Citi Trends in that both organizations care about customer service. The YMCA was created to help build the mind, body and spirit of an individual through providing programs that are based on Christian principles. The Pooler branch impacts the community economically by providing employment for 100 regular employees and then during the summer months and additional 75 are hired. The annual wage payroll is $1.05million with annual benefits reaching $80,000 plus.

The Pooler branch of the YMCA is known as The West Chatham YMCA. The West
