The goddess Demeter took good care of the earth. She watered the plants and crops with her beautiful daughter Persephone. Below the earth there was a dark and gloomy world under King Pluto. One day King Pluto climbed up to the banks of the Styx River and saw Persephone. He had never seen anyone so beautiful and he fell in love with Persephone instantly. Pluto wanted Persephone to be his wife.
Pluto snatched Persephone and thundered back to the under world. He told Persephone that he loves her wanted her to be his queen. While on earth Demeter searched for her daughter and forgot all her work. When she almost lost her hope she sat by the Styx river and the river whispered what had happened. Then she ran to Zeus and asked for help. Zeus said that if Persephone eats anything in the underworld she must stay there. And then he sent his messenger to the underworld to find out.
And in the underworld, Persephone was very hungry because she didn’t eat anything. Then Pluto held out some pomegranate. It smelled delicious, and when twelve seeds were dropped into Persephone’s palm, she lifted them to her lips. Just that moment, Hermes the messenger arrived to the underworld but it was too late. Persephone had eaten half of the seeds.
Hermes said everything to Zeus and finally Zeus decided what to do. Since Persephone ate six seeds she must stay in the underworld for six months and the rest she will return to her mother. That is why in spring and summer when Demeter is happy the sun shines. And in autumn, when Persephone goes back to the underworld, the flowers die and the tress shed their leaves as Demeter cries.
G. Comments: making a book report needs much attention and the information that are stated should be accurate.
The story is very touching for it shows the love of a mother and how the nature sympathizes. And it also gave me some ideas to create my own story.
