A symbol that has an important meaning in Persepolis is the key. When the key is first mentioned, Marji’s maid is holding it and explaining that the key was given to his son. In panel 99.4, Marji’s maid says,”They gave this to my son at school. They told the boys that if they went to war and were lucky enough to die, this key would get them into heaven.” This symbol represents a kind of last resort for the children.
