Personal statement

My name is Fan hing lee, I am currently studying fashion design and knitwear in Hong Kong Design Institute higher diploma . I have learned that using hand knit machine knitted structure, use computer program drawing and knitting different pattern or structure of fabric,sewing techniques.Also, i learned how a fashion design project is run and how they operate, from theme,trend and style research to final design and shooting, including choose fabric and how to achieve the design by self. I have insight a lots of structure of different clothes, it let me know how to use these skills to manufacture more attractive clothing. I’ve also prepare to open online shop and apply different competition to accumulate my design experience, such as Fur competition and Young designer competition(YDC) and so on. I’ve been a part time sales in Baleno and musical Instruments store,i have learn how to communicate with customers, and analyzing their preferences,and i have some dresser experience . I’ve simply learned a little bit of business knowledge in the design & business subject and had finish some practice project. Such as the levels of Market Segmentation including Mass Marketing,Segment marketing,Niche marketing ,Micro-marketing ,and comprehend what is Positioning, Marketing Mix , Fashion Promotion,Marketing Research and SWOT Analysis and so on. It makes me better understanding fashion business and know how difficult of the fashion business compare with fashion design.I started interested and wanna learning more of it.

The reason of i loving fashion because fashion is creative, seductive, always changing and a form of art, to others it is a religion. To me,it makes me know how to imagination exert in fashion, it is a form of art and self-expression.I am drawn to the endless possibilities of fashion, the idea that someone can fully express themselves through their clothes captivates me. I think fashion have close relationship with art, music, history and culture. I enjoy experimenting with fashion, seeing what works and what does not, and working out why it doesn’t work. I had some major fashion disasters, but have learnt from them and so have developed my own sense of style.I love fashion, so I like to know more about it. I hope that my future work will be related with fashion , so i decided to attend fashion design courses , from clothing inspired excited to conduct the process of garment making, it makes me better understanding of what is fashion design , how does it get a balance in reality and imagination.

In other side,I deeply realize that learning fashion design can help you become a fashion consultant, a fashion designer,you can design an amazing collection，you can challenge different fashion competition get experience , you can be a creative designer, but this is only a small step, it doesn't mean you have a real success. We can find the reason of a lots of famous designer or designer’s brand can be success that the most important reason is they have strong business sense.Our favourite mainstream fashion labels have designers and creatives just like us at the heart of their business.But, they also have a whole team of accountants, marketers, analytics experts and manages to make sure the money keeps rolling in,all of things without money will getting more difficult, it shows how fashion business important in the fashion industry, it keeps balance between design, customer and interests. So i think a good designer not just need to have a very professional fashion knowledge, also they have to need a keen business acumen ability, require in-depth understanding of the marketing channels need to have excellent organizational skills, and good communication skills, these are the impact of the key to success,that’s reason of why i consider a business degree.

Most designers will want to set up their own brand, I am no exception. Learning fashion business can help me control of the brand development, it makes me understand the process of planning, implementing and controlling of a marketing strategy, and develop a strategic approach to the assessment of markets in order to decide on the distribution policy aims of the brand , analyse and manage aspects related to the planning, development and production of a fashion collection,also plan business objectives and detect, through appropriate indicators, the difference between what was planned and the actual results in order to take appropriate corrective action . it can makes me know an understanding of the principles of economics and finance enables the participant to measure profitability and ensure compliance with budgets, the most important is face as a new business is that cash flows out when the money use for product development and manufacturing . Fashion business helps be able to define strategies for coordinating a commercial proposal and developing a collection that expresses fashion trends and meets specific production-related lead times and costs,and define the price range and the target audience, how to setting the right price for product and work it out by starting with the amount that a customer would be willing to pay, and working backwards to calculate how much you can spend on materials and manufacturing while still turning a profit. Also learn skilled in coordinating business partners and employees.

In my career plans, I want to first try an online store, then work on some international  company after obtaining a bachelor's degree and learning more knowledge and skills in work, when i have to absorb a lot of skills,experience and grow enough then leave the company. I will looking for different investors to invest in my store,set up physical stores on the basis of the online store, as an independent designer and operators to continue my career, and my hobbies and interest are music,travel,running and reading. I’ve been save money and travel a lots of place alone so I am independent.

I think international fashion business degree will give me confidence to handle a fashion program and objectively to deal more about the fashion business issues.
