PERSONAL STATEMENT
When I was studying for psychology during my A levels I got a chance to visit Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences with my teacher and class fellows where I visited the psychiatric department and met various patients who were suffering from depression, obsessive compulsive disorder plus anxiety disorders. I would like to share about specific patient at the department who himself began notifying us how he used to wash his hands 20 times and every time before sitting anywhere he used to check that place through his hands that whether it was clean because according to him, he and his clothes would catch germs if he was insatiable with the cleanliness of that area where he was going to sit.
Thus, after listening to all the conversation of this patient and after close observation
I started to think that even I have this routine of washing hands infinity of times and inspecting the place through my hands before sitting. Realizing that there are other people in the world like me who have similar routine I asked the doctor who was elucidating us the issues and diseases of all the patients. And that this patient was suffering from a severe kind of OCD based on some other OCD symptoms too which he was quite reluctant to tell. However, the doctor emphasized that the two symptoms mentioned by this patient could merely be overcome through self-control, persistence and hard work.
As a result, I came to the conclusion that I too have encountered these symptoms of OCD, which I could solely get rid of, provided that I am ready to change my life style and gradually develop resistance to these actions. I should wear a rubber band on my wrist, stretching the rubber band and let it go to hit back directly at the tip of my wrist compelling me to divert my mind towards some thing else apart from these obsessive and compulsive thoughts. This instilled in me the feeling that , at present such type of disorders are getting exceedingly common so I should and could help these patients and bring them to the normal and brighter side of life as their whole life style is disturbed due to OCD.
According to me, psychology is a perfect career field for me not just because of my personal experience or my meeting with the OCD patient but also because I am an individual who has greater awareness of the issues that I have been facing throughout my life along with all kind of my nuances proved by awareness of my OCD symptoms. Because, before assisting patients a psychologist need to be self-aware. I feel that I am very good at interacting with people and to my credulity, I know how to play with words and sentences relying upon the person with whom I am conversing. It’s a fact that psychologists have to deal with patients of different age groups as sometimes they might be face to face with a teenager and an aged person on a same day who are having same issues. So, the psychologists will be required to cleverly pick and use the words while communicating with the two different patients.
