PAPAL VISIT ESSAY

In the article " Pope says church role in politics"for good of all", Pope

Benedict is criticized for making this statement. Pope Benedict believes that

the Catholic Church plays an important role in shaping social policies and does

not seek to take over or interfere with the government. In a homily to pilgrims in

southern Italy, Pope Benedict spoke out against abortion, gay marriages, and

embryo research. Left wing politicians in Italy, Spain,and other predominantly

catholic countries accuse the pope of interfering in domestic affairs. Pope

Benedict states that his speech was not intended to interfere with the secular

ways of government but rather supports and cooperates with the government on

moral issues for the good of all.

In the article " GOP lawmaker vows to boycott Pope's speech to Congress",

three- term republican Paul Gosar of Arizona says he will boycott Pope Francis'

speech to congress. He believes that the Pope's speech will be addressed as a

politician and not a Pope. Gosar admitted as a Roman Catholic he was rather

eager for the Pope's address. His eagerness fell short when he heard the

media report that the Pope's speech was mainly going to be about "flawed

climate change policies". Gosar strongly feels that the Pope should stick to

standard Christian theology rather than political issues. He stated that he would
