Problem Statement- I'm leaving on a ship from New York to San Francisco. A ship leaves New York on the first of every month at noon. The same thing occurs over in San Francisco at the first of the month. Each ship arrives exactly six months after it leaves. I have to find out how many ships I will run into while on my journey. I think I will have to make a diagram in order to answer this problem correctly. I will have to start with New York on one side and San Francisco on the other.
Process- I'm going to make a diagram showing my journey from New York to San Francisco. Im going to color code it to show you the ships that I past and my own ship.
Solution- While making a diagram, I came to the conclusion that I run into 4 ships. About half way through my 3rd month I ran into my 1st ship. About half way through my 4th month I ran into my 2nd ship. About half way through my 5th month I ran into my 3rd ship. When I was arriving in San Francisco another ship was pulling out so that would be a 4th ship. So total I ran into 4 ships on my journey from New York to San Francisco.
Extentions- Mariah is a train conductor. She is traveling from Philadelphia, PA to Las Vegas, Nevada. She has to make a total of 10 stops. Everytime Mariah pulls out another train pulls out. How many trains will Mariah run into during her trip from "The City of Brotherly Love" to "Sin City". (Including the train when she arrives at the station.) Make a diagram or show ANY work that it took you to answer the problem.
Evaluation- I think that I understood the problem pretty well. I think that the diagram I made was very useful. I hope I was suppose to count the train that was there when I arrived in San Francisco. Other than that I understood the problem very well, and I actually liked it!
