Prescription Drugs
Prescription drugs are a very iffy subject in today's world. They can be used to help very sick or injured persons or they can be abused and or stolen and sold for profit or to get high. One of the most stolen prescriptions is the deadly drug known as OxyContin or "Oxy's". Oxy's are one of the most intense painkillers and are used for patients in extreme pain some examples are cancer patients. In Philadelphia, 22 deaths have been linked to OxyContin in a 3 month period. An increase in the abuse has led to the increase of overdoses. OxyContin related deaths are on the rise across the nation and the deaths in Philadelphia have skyrocketed from 17 in 1999 to 41 in 2000 and an estimated 80 in 2001. And who the death toll keeps climbing and climbing. Some symptoms of overdoses are slow breathing, seizures, dizziness, weakness, loss of consciousness, coma, confusion, tiredness, cold and clammy skin, and small pupils.
Pasco County Sheriff's Vice and Narcotics Unit detectives made the largest OxyContin drug bust in the county's history Jan. 24, 2001 with the arrest of a couple accused of selling the prescription drug. Deputies arrested Santa Nina Bennett, 55, and husband Alan Bennett, 53, and confiscated 1,010 pills with a street value of up to $20,000. The couple was booked into the Land O' Lakes jail with a bail of $150,000 each. This just goes to show you that anyone from anywhere and any age can be selling prescription drugs and they could be living next door to you!
