Process Analysis

To understand about the process of creating and editing a newspaper is necessary to analyze the flow of activities starting from idea generation to the topic to the sending to production.

If we analyze the five steps process mapping of the newspaper, we can see that the story idea is generated by the editor and assigned to a reporter who will conduct a research and from there compose a story. After that, the story is reviewed by the editor – at this time, the editor analyses the consistency of the gathered research and evaluates whether the writing is concise, and relevant and rating the work’s composition, scientific accuracy, originality, and interest to the journal’s readers. If  not satisfied the editor returnes the story to the reporter to be revised according to the new editor’s directions. No grammar and spelling corrections are made in this phase.

When story is checked and approved by the editor it is passed onto the copy editor. Copy editors are the defense against bad writing – they proofread and correct bad grammar, spelling, punctuation and terminology and also are called upon to design pages, in other words, do "layout". It involves deciding which stories, photos and graphics will run and which of those will be featured most prominently. When errors are found by the copy editor they are just highlighted and then the paper is returned to the reporter for correction. After the correction and each of the parties – editor, reporter and copy editor – satisfied, the story goes to the next stages – production and printing area.

If we analyse the flow of activities and look at the the number of errors identified in which stage we can state that the error detection during the cycle is not being effective since errors are still found in subsequent areas. Typical errors identified during the 44 days such as misspelled words, wrong number, bad grammar, etc should be solved in this first areas but they keep coming in composing and printing area. In these areas there are no quality control and correction of errors found during these steps incur a large spendings to the company.
