Without an opener

Most people have been there at one point or another, you're out with your friends having a few drinks. You go to crack open a fresh one but lo and behold the bottle opener is nowhere to be seen. Now this could be solved with a survey around the room to see who is keeping you from your drink of choice, but that is a fools errand. As someone who's been down this road far to often, I will help you skip this step and head straight to drinking those frosty brews.

There are two methods which I believe are the ideal substitute in the event of a missing bottle opener. Bare in mind, both of these methods require tools that are not fragile. The first involves  a lighter or similarly shaped object, while the other uses a counter top or similarly shaped hard surface. The reason I will be using lighters and counter tops for the explanation is because they are both typically found around parties,  or gatherings of that nature.

The first method is the lighter method. So you are going to need a lighter for this to work. First, grip the neck of the bottle with your index finger about half an inch away from the bottle cap.  Wedge the base of the lighter in between your finger and the bottle cap, the lighter can either be vertical or horizontal depending on your preference. Make sure you have a solid grip on the lighter and that the base of the lighter is tucked under the lip of the bottle cap, so that the lighter doesn't slip. Now the lighter is a lever and your index finger is the  pivot point. Pull the top of the lighter downwards while maintaining a solid amount of  pressure against the beer bottle / bottle cap. This will put pressure on the bottom of the bottle cap, and if all goes well then the cap should come off. Even if it doesn't come completely off at first, if you hear gas escaping from the bottle then that means your on the right track.
