RENOVATION OF HOSTELS
SYNOPSIS:
We have taken the project for the renovation of new hostels of Indian Institute of Management Raipur along with the nearby playground. The renovation is expected to take approximately 74 days, which includes initial preparation (4 days), renovation of each of the hostels (12 days each) and the renovation of the playground (9.5 days); considering the hostels to be renovated in the sequential order of their hostel numbers and the hostels being completely empty during the course of renovation.
Using Microsoft Project software, we have tried to reduce the total duration of the project which is done by ensuring mutually exclusive activities are done in parallel and through optimizing resource allocation.

ACTIVITIES:
- Initial Preparation for the renovation of the hostels: This activity involves the initial works that are required to be done before the renovation process starts. It constitutes setting up contract with labour; measurement of the room walls, floors and ceilings; and the procurement of paints, tiles and washroom equipment based on the measurements taken. The total activity takes 4 days.
- Renovation of each of the hostels: The activity involves the renovation process of each of the hostels with the following sub- activities as mentioned in the project:
- Shifting students with their luggage to temporary location
- Remove furniture & preparing rooms for renovation
- Remove Doors & cover important parts of the rooms
- Painting the walls & ceiling
- Removing tiles
- Putting tiles
- Inserting new washroom accessories
- Attaching Doors for air conditioning
- Creating provisions for Air condition
- Cleaning
- Installing Air Conditioning Units
The total time taken by this activity is 12 days for each of the hostels and 8 labourers are taken to renovate each hostel, considering that each of the labourer works 8hrs a day and Saturdays and Sundays are non- working days.
- Playground Development: This activity involves the development of playground which is located nearby the 5 hostels. Here, a contract with a new workforce of labourers in established as there is a requirement of less skilled labourers for this activity as compared to the ones in hostel renovation. This is done to minimize the overall labour cost for the project. The sub- activities include:
- Ordering bench & goal posts
- Measurement of ground
- Contract with labour
- Grass and weed cutting
- Bench and goal post installation
- Creating provision for tap water & pipe

CONCLUSION:
The allocation of resources and the cost of each activity are mentioned in the MS Project file attached with this report. The scheduling of the tasks is done keeping into consideration that Saturdays and Sundays are non- working days for the labourers. Working hours are limited to 8 hours per day (09:00 a.m. – 01:00 p.m., 02:00 p.m. – 06:00 p.m.). The difficult portion of the project was to schedule parallel activities keeping in mind the resource available at our disposal and also the total duration of the project.
