Essay Preview: Properties of Oxides - to Compare the Properties of Metallic and Nonmetallic Oxides
Properties of Oxides
Purpose: To compare the properties of metallic and nonmetallic oxides.
Hypothesis:
Nonmetallic oxides make acids. Metallic oxides make bases.
Equipment:
Magnesium oxide (MgO)
Calcium oxide (CaO)
Phenolphthalein solution
Bromothymol solution
Water
Well plate
Eye droppers
Beaker
Baking soda (NaHCO3)
Vinegar (CH3COOH)
2 flasks
Stopper
Procedure:
Calcium oxide was placed in two different places on the well plate.
Phenolphthalein solution was added to one of spots containing the metal oxide. Bromothymol was added to the other.
The reactions were observed and recorded.
Magnesium was burned to make magnesium oxide.
The powder was placed in two different spots on the well plate.
Bromothymol and phenolphthalein solution were added to magnesium oxide.
The reactions were observed and recorded.
A flask was filled with water and bromothymol was added to it.
The other flask was filled with vinegar and baking soda.
The stopper with the 90o tube attached to it was placed on top of the flask filled with vinegar and baking soda. The end of the tube was placed in the other flask. The reactions were observed and recorded.
Observations:
Solution
Oxide
Phenolphthalein
Bromothymol
Calcium oxide
-calcium oxide turned pink
-became a base
-calcium oxide remained blue
Magnesium oxide
-magnesium oxide turned pink
-became a base
