Canada was known as the new land of opportunity in the early 20th century and attracted a large number of immigrants. Therefore Canada was known as the immigration capital at that time. The city of Toronto was in the midst of expanding. As the population increased, the street life after dark also began to get more popular. "The great tide of immigration that has of late years been flowing into this country has presented serious problems to our Canadian communities, especially larger cities;" As the majority of immigrants came over with their families, they found the cost of living very high and difficult to be able to afford to purchase or rent a place to live. Most immigrants who resulted in prostitution had received little education and were having problems learning and speaking the Canadian English language. Very few had not even entered high school, as they had to support their family due to a death or desertion of a parent or unemployment.
Also known as the sex trade industry. Prostitution is when a female sexually occupies herself for money. Prostitution is the means of fulfilling particular economic, social and psychological needs. They economically benefited by pleasuring the customer sexually in exchange for cash or sometimes gifts. "Prostitution is a social disease, i.e., it is not merely an affair between the sensual man and the depraved and avaricious woman, as individuals, but is the outcome of a complex social condition, which through artificial stimulation, multiplies both the demand and the supply." This is the main reason why prostitution exists because of the high demand offered by men to be pleasured sexually by a supplier or females in this case. In the article it discusses poverty as being the number one cause of prostitution. This is very true because in 1915, you were required to support yourself financially just like today. Since the creation of males and females, the need for sexual engagement has always existed. Many prostitutes and strippers continue to sell themselves for sex because it is a quick way to make an honest buck. Probably the same goes for when this article was written even though it is a very embarrassing occupation to admit to. Another reason for prostitution might be because their daytime job is not enough money to support themselves with and they need another source of income as a great majority of prostitutes did lack in their educational skills. Without having a secondary education makes it very hard for anyone living in large cities to have enough money for the essentials such as food, shelter and clothing, let alone all the other extra costs humans encounter through out their lives.
Historically prostitution is one of the oldest professions and is still very common today. It is a very profitable job. With all the new pornographic magazines and Internet sites that did not exist until the middle of the twentieth century, sex is a billion dollar industry that will never be ignored. Prostitution is a means of independency for women to earn money without acknowledging the government for financial assistance. Prostitution is like being trapped in a revolving door. It is a very addicting and everlasting occupation. Once you enter into the prostitution market or trade, it is very hard to get out of it because it provided them with stable living conditions. Canadian female citizens have adventurously had a tough time in receiving the respect they disserve since Canada has been nationally accepted as a country. Socially women were not accepted. It was not until after 1915 when women were able to vote in any provincial or federal election. In the early 1900's many men took women for granted and believed that the man should be the person who works and earns money and the woman should take care of the household duties. If a woman was not married, it was
