Smoking

"Smoking is unhealthy." That common saying may contain some truth. Until recently, Germany was one of Western Europe's last bastions for smokers. While bans went into place in the U.K., Spain, Italy and Ireland, Germans continued to light up in restaurants and bars. Until a new Law came into effect 1 January 2008, banning smoking indoors.

An Assessment of

Smoking indoors

In the first place, people in Europe and especially in Germany enjoy smoking indoors.

But now, that's changed. Germany's federal states have been introducing wide-ranging

smoking bans, and they're not sitting well with many. Some don't like the government

trying to change their German tradition. Others say traditional bars could become a thing

of the past. Some say that they like the new law but they tend to be the minority in

Germany.

In the second place the new smoking law in Germany has hit some fierce resistance

which is surprising since most people Here in Germany almost always follow the rules

and are not adverse to new regulations. Leading the fight are owners of small bars and

restaurants. Who argue that the new law will put them out of business. Germany is well

known for the Beer pubs, cafes and traditional restaurants where the smells of cigarette

smoke and fresh beer or coffee goes hand in hand.

Lastly on 12 February 2008, The German state of Rhineland-Palatinate suspended a

smoking ban in single-room pubs after a group of bar owners complained that their
