In life people have to make challenging and time provoking decisions. In the movie October Sky and in the play "A Raisin in the Sun" the characters also had to make difficult decisions. Both Lena Younger and Homer Hickums made choices that they thought would better themselves and others. The choices they made had many effects on their lives. These decisions would not only effect them but also the lives of the people around them.
Homer Hickums from the day he was born was thought to be destined to work in the coal mine like all the other Coalwood citizens. Destiny however could not control Homer as he made the decision to make rockets and to fight for what he believes so that he would not have to work in the mines. This choice did not come without consequences for as he trudged on with making rockets he soon learned that he would have to do so against his father's will and with the ridicule of the town constantly on his shoulders. Through it all Homer grew as a person as he learned to believe in himself and to never give up. No matter how many obstacles where put in their way he and his teammates never did give up. Their determination to fly their rockets and to succeed resulted in them winning the national science fair. Through this, all four boys where able to do something with their lives. Homer learned that dreams do come true if you try hard enough. Through this decision he learned that even his father could come to respect and love him as a son he could truly be proud of.
The play "A Raisin in the Sun" also had many characters that made decisions throughout the book. One such character, Leina made the decision to give Walter a portion of the money they received from the insurance company. By doing this she showed Walter that she trusted him and she wanted him to take charge as man of the household.
