The term recidivism was taking from the Latin word ("recidivus" which means recurring) and "recido" which also means "I fall back". It is the act of a person repeating a crime or a particular behavior that does not go down well with the society in which the he or she lives. Or the repetition of a particular preference that goes against the legal system that governs the individual. Or it is the act of a person repeating an undesirable practice after the person have experienced negative outcome for that practice, and in most cases treatment and training are introduced in order to get rid the unwanted behavior and implement the behavior that is acceptable by society.
Recidivism is merely a waste of time and tax payers' money, because it simply does not work for a large number of the so-called criminals. Let say for example; a sex offender who was convicted of sexually abusing a female and sent to a recidivism program after his time in jail. He is likely to repeat the same offence; because most treatment centers will or usually consider these individuals as "criminal" and not merely the uncontrollable act of Ð''nature'. The difference between a sexual abuse and sex as we know it is the lack of consent from the person when it comes to it legal meaning. The physical actions themselves are always varying from one offender to the next. And yet in most recidivism centers, all offenders are put in one place to receive their treatment (whether you're a sexual offender or not) with the hopes that the criminals do not repeat the same crime. This is ineffective because these centers usually does not show concern as to why these people committed the Ð''crime' but rather why he or she should stop and integrate back to society with a preferred societal behavior.
Another example is; when a boy of seven years of age touches or kisses the breast of a girl in their back yard without the consent of the girl and as a result the boy get punished, this does not mean that the boy will not touch or kiss the breast of a girl again when he grows older. It simply means that he will be a lot more caution the next time he feels like doing it. Or what would you say to a woman who steals a piece of bread to feed her hungry child?, would you only focus on telling her to stop rather than providing her the opportunity where she can get food for her child?
