"My mother called me a whore, because I was having sex," said fourteen year old Maria, whom was pregnant, and couldn't decide whether she wanted to have an abortion or give the baby up for adoption. Many teens like Maria think that it's ok to have sex at a young age, or that if they have sex and don't use protection, that they will never get pregnant. What most teens today don't realize is that even if you're having sex for the first time, there is always an 85% chance that you will get pregnant if you don't use protection. Some forms of protection against teen pregnancy, are birth control, which you can get by taking the pill daily, wearing the patch weekly, or just getting the shot. Other forms of preventing teen pregnancy include a cervical cap, which is a soft, rubber cup that fits in the cervix during sexual intercourse. Condoms, are sheaths that fit on an erected penis, and are usually latex, and is used during sexual intercourse to prevent pregnancy. Other forms of preventing pregnancy, are a diaphragm which is soft rubber dome that covers the cervix during sexual intercourse. The female condom, which is like a male condom, but it is much smaller , and inserted in the vagina during sexual intercourse. The calendar method, is the method of not having sex eight to twenty-one days after a female's menstrual period. The morning after pill, also known as MAP, is a pill that is taken seventy-two hours after sexual intercourse, and two more are taken twelve hours later , to prevent pregnancy, in case the form of protection doesn't work the first time. The number one way to prevent any kind of pregnancy, especially in teenage girls is abstinence, which is holding back from sex until marriage. Since every female's body is different, it is best to see a gynecologist, or a family doctor before using any of these types of prevention. Out of the many teenage girls that get pregnant each year, 7,130 of them are from Nevada. Many teenage girls are having sex right now, because they don't realize that sex is not something that you have to do in order to fit in, and they end up having sex because of peer pressure, and wanting to be cool, and when they become pregnant, none of the friends that they had before want to be friends with them, because they are usually referred to as being nasty, or a whore, and usually the non pregnant teen's parent(s) do not want their kids to be friends with a pregnant teen, because they think that they will be a bad influence on their child.
