Reflection Paper - Diversity
Over the last century, mankind has made significant increases in the fight against discrimination. Pioneers such as Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Susan B. Anthony have made progress in this fight. One would be completely ignorant to say discrimination does not exist today.
It is a harsh realization to see the discrimination that goes on in today's society. Everywhere you go there are racism, sexism, and violence because of both issues. Look at schools; you can always point out what that majority race is in that institution. When it comes to a certain city, the city is very much segregated. Yes, we have made progress but our world is still very much corrupt.
When the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was created, it provided protection for all persons regardless of race, color, or national origin. Today colleges and employers are given quotas and are forced to turn down qualified applicants based on their race or sex. This is to me is a form of discrimination because now you are discriminating upon intellectual people because you need to have a minority.
I think it is very important to learn about every culture in school at a young age. The children need to know that true life is hard and you need to accept everyone for who they are and not what culture they belong to.
A child's point of view is definitely influenced by their home environment and can sometimes be an issue when the child is faced to have different views at school. When I become a teacher I plan on making the kids aware of what it means to have open views towards every culture and race. My classroom will be a very integrated and loving classroom, where the kids will learn to accept everyone and befriend them as well.
