While the main focus of this evening's class was Section 45 of the Doctrine and Covenants and the signs of the Lord's Second Coming, I would first like to mention an observation from the preceding sections which, though perhaps quite straightforward, brings a better level of understanding as to what the early Saints of this dispensation were going through. In the section heading in Doctrine and Covenants 43, we learn that at the time of this revelation some members of the church were disturbed by those making false claims as the Lord's revelators. The word of the Lord and previously been revealed that His people were to follow His prophet, and as I initially read these words I thought of what would cause people to act in such a manner - just follow the prophet. But reflecting further on the matter, one must keep in mind the condition of the church - namely, being less than a year old and very different from other Christian organizations which were known about at the time. James Covill and others had come from Protestant backgrounds, lacking the organization and revelation necessary for the completeness of the Lord's kingdom. Thus, while it was easy to speak of prophets and apostles, it was surely harder to actually follow their words and accept their teachings as the word and mind of the Lord. For me, being raised by goodly parents in the ways of the Lord and following those teachings has made this issue very clear to me, and considering the lack of such a background which the early members had, it brings a greater understanding as to why this problem existed and why Satan would strive to exploit it. Small background and historical details, while not the focus of one's scripture study to draw nearer to the Lord, can provide a perspective which allows in an increase in spiritual knowledge and strength.

Another concern brought up by a class member today as we began Section 45 was phrased basically as follows: The Lord has been telling His people, since the beginning of this dispensation, that the hour is at hand for His Second Coming, and yet it has been over 170 years, He still hasn't come, and it appears that there is still so much which must occur until the signs are fulfilled and the Millennial reign is ushered in. Why, then, should I strive so diligently to prepare? To me the matter is simple enough to say that the Lord through His prophets has told us to do so - therefore, in the words of President Kimball, DO IT! But thinking about it, several other thoughts came to my mind. How strong would my testimony be if I grew up in Primary hearing about the importance of food storage, 72-hour kits, spiritual
