Research Paper Proposal

Nathaniel Hawthorne was amongst the most accomplished writers in the world. Not because he just wrote stories but because he found a way to address real world social faults and qualities in his stories. Amongst his most credited and accomplished work is his short story “The Birthmark.” In this story, he explores the concept of mortality and the human quest to become perfect and without deficiency. The whole story is parallel with his theme. Hawthorne often uses simple conflicts within his stories to get his points across to better explain his theme. In “The Birthmark” Hawthorne uses a classic battle between nature and the manufactured world. In my research paper, I will better go into detail about Hawthorne’s hidden meaning behind “The Birthmark.” I will do this by drawing from Hawthorne’s personal life and seeing how it compares to his story. By doing this we will better understand what Hawthorne was trying to say because we will see what he was thinking when he was writing the story.
