“Digital India “Program was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 1st July 2015.It aims at digitizing Central Government and ministries of education ,health etc for its citizens by the use of Information Technology.Digital India consists of three core components-

1. Creation of Digital infrastructure

2. Delivering services digitally

3.Digital Literacy.

According to Narendra Modi ,

INDIA TODAY (IT)  + INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (IT)= INDIA TOMORROW (IT)

The nine main key points of Digital India are as follows:-

  1. Broadband Highways
  2. Universal Access to Phones
  3. Public Internet Access Program
  4. E-Governance
  5. E-kranti
  6. Information For All
  7. Electronics Manufacturing
  8. IT for Jobs
  9. Early harvest programs.

The estimated costs will be :

  1. Rs 100000 Crore in ongoing schemes.
  2. Rs 13000 Crore for new schemes and activities.

The expected impact of this Digital India Campaign By 2019:

  1. Broadband in 2.5 lakh villages,universal phone connectivity
  2. Net Zero Imports by 2020
  3. 400,000 Public Internet Access Points
  4. Wi-Fi in 2.5 lakh schools,all universities, public wi-fi hotspots for citizens
  5. Digital inclusion:1.7 Crore trained for IT ,telecom and Electronics Jobs
  6. Job creation :Direct 1.7 crore and Indirect at least 8.5 Crore
  7. E-Governance and e-services:Across Government
  8. India to be leader in IT use in Services- Health,education,banking
  9. Digitally empowered Citizens- Public cloud,Internet access.
  10. Economically GDP is expected to be $1 trillion by 2025
  11. Balanced Growth in rural and urban area.
  12. Social Modernization

  1. Lowering the carbon footprint by reducing fuel consumptiom,waste management and greener workplaces.

Moreover there are many major challenges to be faced by this initiative like Privacy Protection , Data Protection , Cyber law , E-Governance and E-commerce.

In this paper the author used the qualitative research methodology.The paper started with the definition of Digital India,its aims and Objectives.The nine main areas of this campaign are described clearly in details.The expected impact of this Digital India initiative on the basis of economy,society and environment are explained.Finally the main challenges expected to be faced are listed.
