What was the book about?

Private Dodd is a British rifleman fighting against the French. during an attack the British retreat from the lines and in the confusion Private Dodd is left behind enemy lines, with only one mission to kill the French, rifleman Dodd must evade his pursuers and make his way to friendly lines alone and with dwindling supplies.

What's the author’s purpose in writing this book?

The moral of the story in my opinion is to spotlight courage that Private Dodd found in himself and devotion to his country even though he was left behind.

How was the author effective or in effective in presenting his purpose?

The author put several examples of courage that Private Dodd showed in the book, Dodd had to protect not only himself but also the prisoners of war from Portugal, Dodd became focused and continued to adapt in his surroundings. Witnessing the casualty of his comrades in war he did not lose heart. The part of this book that was most relevant to me was: The fact that Private Dodd never gave up, always had his eyes forward, always focused spoke most to me.

How does our core values relate to this book?

Private Dodd portrayed all of the core values: courage given his dangerous situation, honor in how he help the POW’s even though he could have just saved himself, and commitment to his country instead of resenting them.
