Romeo and Juliet
Where and how are these moods of excitement, romance and danger created during the first scene?
How do they affect the audience's feelings about Romeo and Juliet at this point in the play?
Romeo and Juliet was written by William Shakespeare between 1589-1595 and was based on a poem. The play was set in the Elizabethan times in Verona. Shakespeare usually did his plays in different countries because he could make things up and people wouldn't know because not many people will have been to abroad.
The relationship between father and daughter is strict. The father rules the daughter. The father will pick a husband for his daughter despite how the daughter feels about that man.
Romeo and Juliet are from two different family's who are at war. Romeo and Juliet fall in love with each other. The next day they get married. That is when the trouble begins.
In act 1 scene 5 a sense of romance, excitement and an undercurrent of danger is created in the play, which makes it good to watch because you are on the edge wondering what is going to happen.
People still read the book or watch the film because it was written by one of the most famous play writers, William Shakespeare. Shakespeare wrote many famous plays in his time and his name is still known around the world.
The play was based on a poem which was written before Shakespeare was born. Shakespeare then turned the poem in to a play. There has been a book and two films based on Romeo and Julie, which are very popular to many audiences.
In act 1, scene 5 from line 1-14, a mood of excitement is created by the servants rushing about and preparing everything for the party.
The first serving man says “You are looked for, asked for and sought for in the great chamber.” This creates a mood of excitement as you see the servants panicking as they are trying to make everything perfect for the party.
In Capulets speech he creates a mood of fun and excitement. He makes jokes and and makes the audience laugh. He says in his speech that whoever doesn't dance is a fool. Everyone laughs at this, knowing that it's a joke but everyone will dance because they don't want people thinking that they are fools.
Capulet says “That I have worn a visor and could tell a whispering and could tell a whispering tale in a fair ladies ear.” He is saying that he is past the time when he used to party and dance.
Capulet is happy and joyful when the guests arrive. When he does his speech he makes everyone feel welcome and he makes a few jokes which make the audience laugh. He is enjoying being the host.
In this section a a mood of romance is created. This is the first time Romeo lays his eyes on Juliet. It's love on first sight. It's Romeo's language that tells us that this scene is romantic. He uses:
Rhyme вЂ" Bright and night.
Simile вЂ" As a rich jewel in an Ethiop's ear.
Uplifting language вЂ" He is depressed as he was when he thought he was in love with Rosaline.
Personification вЂ" It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night.
“Did my heart till now? Forswear it, sight! For I ne'er saw true beauty till this night.” The language used by Romeo shows that he is deeply in love with Juliet.
In this section the first mood of danger is created. Tybalt spots Romeo in the crowd. He says to a servant “Fetch my my my rapier, boy.” Tybalt is asking the servant to fetch him his sword. He goes over to see Capulet to tell him that a Montague is here. Capulet says that Romeo is meant to be a very nice charming young lad and that Verona brags of him. Tybalt then goes on to say that Romeo is here to ruin the party, but Capulet sticks up for Romeo saying that he is here to enjoy the party not to ruin it. Capulet is taking Romeo's side over Tybalt's.
In this section a mood of danger is created. Tybalt is arguing with Capulet about Romeo being at the party. Tybalt says “It fits when such a villain is a guest: I'll not endure him. Tybalt doesn't want Romeo at the party, but because he is, Tybalt wants to fight Romeo. Capulet has had enough of Tybalt arguing with him so he shouts at Tybalt. Tybalt realises that Capulet isn't going to let him fight Romeo, so he decides to leave Romeo alone for now, but his words are heavy and threatening “Patience perforce with wilful choler meeting, makes my flesh tremble in their different greeting.” He spits out alliteration to show his contempt. He is literally shaking with anger, and he speaks in rhyme to make his words memorable. He really emphasizes his anger. Tybalt will feel rejected because Capulet is taking Romeo's side, instead of taking his own. You know that the next time Tybalt and Romeo meet, Tybalt will get revenge.
