Part 1: A Picture – Rorschach test
At first glance, there are three aspects of the picture that grab my attention. I can clearly make out the two mice at the bottom of the blob facing away from each other. At the top of the blob, there are two humans whose noses are larger than normal. The faces aren't far apart and are facing each other. From that perspective observing the rest of the blob, I can add the wine glass between them. Sitting at the counter bar with posture hunched over in conversation sitting on bar stools, wearing obnoxiously large heeled boots. Given the setting described the vibe is of two people discussing their long day at work, perhaps on a Friday night. Taking a step back the whole blob looks like a very hairy man with full facial hair. All that is visible are his eyes, two ears, lips, and philtrum. His hair is thick and on the longer side wrapping around the sides of his neck. His facial expression gives off a warrior vibe from back in the olden ages.
Part 2: A Poem – “The Red Wheelbarrow” by William Carlos Williams
In this poem, I see a picture form with each independent stanza. The focus being on the “wheel barrow” and the hidden meaning it has for the writer. When reading the poem amidst each descriptive line comes to a single word leaving the reader in thought with their personal connection. The setting is on a farm or an open field. For me, the “red wheel barrow” is a flashback to my childhood years and the memories that followed. Back when a little rain never hurt anybody. Play time didn’t end or if it did it was just for a while; until the rain had passed and the sun came out. The first line “so much depends” leads me to believe the reader's associations with each item plays a role in the image is being painted. In line one of the poem “so much depends” provokes thought in the reader and their association with each term. My childhood is a part of who I am and what I will become in the future years.
Part 3: A Short Story – A+P by John Updike
The story was intriguing in a sense it was different with such in-depth details. The true meaning behind the whole situation; disguised in vivid details and Sammy's interpretations. It’s a story about his coming of age where Sammy realizes it’s his time to grow up and chase his dreams. Sammy realizes that conformity to society is only going to leave him unhappy always wishing to have taken a leap of faith and standing up for his beliefs no matter the consequences. In a way, I believe we can all relate to society’s set standards or guidelines to follow as to not be a disappointment or be perceived as a failure. The world is cruel, judgmental, and unjust one must stand up for himself to not fall under the same conformity.
